The following tutorial shows 4 different ways to light a 3ds Max scene using High Dynamic Range images (HDRI) and V-Ray as render engine. It will also compare their results. Knowledge of what an HDR image is is assumed.
We create 6 spheres on top of an infinite plane provided by a white color VRayPlane. While doing so, activate the Base to Pivot option so each one base itself on its lowest point instead of its center. Use 64 segments to provide a smooth surface and apply reflective materials such as chrome and porcelain. Then locate a VRayPhysicalCamera looking down on them so the horizon is not seen. Use its default settings.
The scene was rendered with the same V-Ray render settings for all tests so they could be compared. V-Ray 1.5 SP5 was used within 3ds Max 2009 using the V-Ray Frame Buffer with sRGB option and Frame Stamp activated. 800x600 image resulution was used.
OpenfootageNETlowerAustria01_small.hdr was used as the HDR image for all tests. You can find it in http://www.openfootage.net/ It is not hemispherical, but it can be used as such (the bottom half does not bring lighhting/background/reflections to the scene). It was chosen for its well defined light source and its clouds to reflect.
Locate a VRayLight type Dome anywhere in the scene (it won't affect the outcome). Select a VRayHDRI map as Texture for the light and copy it to the Material Editor. Once there, select Spherical environment as Map type and leave the the default values for the rest.
After some trial and error, we kept 256 as the intensity multiplier in Default (image) units for the VRayLight. This will set the parameter against what we'll compare further tests and find equivalences. The VRayLight was left visible.
The resulting image with the VRayLight invisible (below) was identical, as expected, for this option only make it invisible for the camera, but not the objects, hence the reflections.
In the image, one can clearly identify the location of the light source even if the spheres shed diffuse shadows. You can also tell near the right exposure was achieved by the color of the sky and earth features on the reflections.
Light intensity equivalence between VRayLight and VRayHDRI multipliers was then stablished by using 32 both in Overall and Render multipliers in VRayHDRI settings for a total of 1024 (for the total intensity is one times the other) to achieve the same result.256 VRayLight Default (image) units = 1024 VRayHDRI units o/or
1 VRayLight Default (image) unit = 4 VRayHDRI unit
NOTE: you will obtain the same resulting intensity as long as the product of both Overall and Render multipliers is the same; i.e. you can use 1024 and 1 on each and get the same results. __________________________________________________________________
